The inaugural hack-a-thon for my graduate-level class Marine Data Science with R was a success! All 20 students worked together using their R and GitHub skills to collaboratively analyze a real world social problem. The students chose to look at food scarcity in South Carolina. Their research tackled a host of questions, including how food scarcity disproportionately impacts minority groups, women and children; the impact of local industries on poverty and food scarcity; and the reach of school lunch programs in addressing childhood hunger. The results of their analysis is available here. I'm so proud of this group! |
