As a part of the MSCI 311 course, Biology of Marine Organisms, I encouraged students to write a letter to a public official presenting a marine conservation issue and suggesting a potential solution. This exercise introduces a time-honored technique for civic engagement and empowers students to become active citizens in their community. Although the writing activity was assigned as an extra credit assignment, many students participated and the letters spanned a wide range of marine conservation issues. A subset of these letters can be viewed on the UofSC Climate Theme Semester student project gallery. |
