We partnered with Science Journal for Kids to create a lesson plan for middle school and early high school students, which has now been published! The lesson plan is focused on our right whales and climate change article published last September in Oceanography: "Ocean Regime Shift is Driving Collapse of the North Atlantic Right Whale Population". The lesson plan is available in PDF form, and is also read out loud and presented as a video on YouTube. Teachers interested in using this lesson plan can download a teacher's guide which provides answers to all of the study questions. All of these materials are publicly accessible and completely free :) This is a fantastic way to bring cutting edge science to students before they enter college. The editorial staff at Science Journal for Kids were fantastic to work with, and I really hope I'll have the opportunity to work with them again! Along with Jamie Pierson and Mona Behl, I co-hosted a Town Hall at Ocean Sciences Meeting 2022 to collect feedback on Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity (JEDI) challenges, initiatives and opportunities from the ocean sciences community. We used this venue to introduce the mission and activities of the The Oceanography Society (TOS) JEDI Committee and to foster conversation among OSM participants. Our discussion centered on three themes: 1) major challenges to JEDI in the ocean sciences community, 2) identifying JEDI initiatives that have been successful, as well as initiatives that have been ineffective or harmful, and 3) brainstorming ways that societies such as TOS can assist JEDI initiatives in the ocean sciences community. We had a fantastic turnout and a productive discussion that will be distilled into an article in Oceanography. For those that want to add to the discussion, we will continue to collect information from ocean scientists asynchronously using this survey. |
